If you are looking for a counsellor/therapist, I am Melina, a BACP accredited counsellor with thirty years' experience supporting clients with a variety of emotional and personal issues from anxiety, depression, loss, grief, low self-esteem to more sensitive, childhood issues, self-discovery and complex trauma.
My practice is trauma informed, as it is important that you feel safe with me and safe in the therapeutic space. I specialise in working with the impact of sexual violence and I have expertise in addictions and relationship problems.
I am English Italian, living in the UK, naturally drawn to mixing and working with different cultures and communities and with those marginalised or targeted in some way. Often clients come to me who are missing a sense of belonging, struggling with their personal identity or something that is seen as taboo.
Also, as we have become more aware of how stress and pressure impact our mental health, clients often come with climate anxiety, work/study demands, sleep and relaxation problems.
As a therapist it is a privilege to get to know the person that you will become or was always meant to be.
At any time in our lives, we can face personal difficulties and often clients come to me with deep painful issues from their past - experiencing guilt, fear and shame. I believe that feeling safe, feeling heard and feeling accepted are the core conditions to enable healing to begin.
By definition I would describe therapy as the process of healing, to make or become sound again. I understand that therapy can seem daunting, however, starting the process is to open-up and heal.
In our therapy sessions we may look at the past, the aim is not to self-blame, rather explore and with compassion, so we can understand, change our narrative and our sense of ourselves and our story. Or we may want to focus on what is happening for you now and explore ways that will support and enhance your day-to-day wellness, so you can feel happier and more content.
What good therapy looks like to me is the 'showing up' - purposely turning down the noise around me, what's going on in my head, whether it's busy or calm or what just happened five minutes ago and being truly present with the client, listening and connecting at a deeper level. By acknowledging this within myself, I acknowledge how incredible it is for the client to show-up and be present too. And within this safe space where we can be vulnerable, curious, explorative and celebrative. Good therapy is providing all of these and anything in-between.
